Standing in the heart of the thousand year old winelands of Puyricard, a village typical of Aix, the Château des Gavelles, benefits from an exceptional geographical situation. Built in the early 17th century, the building is in fact a large Provencal farm, or bastide, that was destined specifically for planting vines and making wine, as witnessed by the two large vaulted cellars. It is situated at the foot of Château Grimaldi, the historic residence or the archbishops of Aix en Provence. Since 1639, the year Puyricard was officially incorporated into Aix-en-Provence, it became one of the rare wineries of the city of Aix. The name ‘Gavelles’ comes from the Provencal dialect ‘gaveou’ which means a bundle of vine cuttings. In poetic Provencal, “l’holi dou gaveou”, or ‘the juice of the trellised vines’ designates ‘wine’, and “faire lou gaveou”, or ‘do the gaveou’, means to dance, spinning around on one’s left leg, which is a demonstration of joy, formerly a common practice in the communes around Aix and Marseille. These are the dulcet sounds of wine, Provence and history that are synonymous with this winery of outstanding quality.
